About this print
A tree lies behind the intricate lines of Piet Mondrian's Tableau No. 2. Painted in 1913, the work breaks its subject into a network of small rectangles, black marks and muted grey and ochre. The branches have almost disappeared, but a sense of growth still runs through the picture.
This is an absorbing glimpse of Mondrian developing the abstract language for which he became famous. The centre feels busy and closely woven, while the edges soften, giving your eye room to move in and out of the detail. As a fine-art print, it offers a quieter, more textured side of Mondrian for a study or living room.
