About this print
A palace garden becomes a small, dreamlike world in Paul Klee's Black Columns in a Landscape. Dark pillars stand among soft pink, yellow and grey shapes, while a large leaf and curling architectural details make the scene feel both familiar and strange.
Klee painted the original watercolour in 1919, after renting a studio in Munich's Schloss Suresnes. The palace grounds and nearby English Garden helped inspire the picture. Knowing that, the columns begin to look like fragments of a place remembered rather than a view recorded exactly. This abstract landscape print brings quiet colour and a little curiosity to a living room, bedroom or reading corner.
